More details on new Evangelion project

REI!!!
Either no one has bothered to blog about it or I didn’t look hard enough. So anyway, the latest issue of Newtype has a whole bunch of juicy titbits on the new Evangelion movies starting next year.
Click on to find out…
If you haven’t heard about the new Evangelion project before this, basically it’s a total of four new movies, with the first movie coming out next year.
I’ll just listen them out in the order they are mentioned in the magazine.
It’s going to be crazy. Crazy like the Eva that we love and hate. Apparently, Mr. Anno is working full steam. He’s happy that he can finally recreate Eva “as he wanted it to be”, because he’s no longer limited by the technology of 12 years ago, ergo lots of 3D CG this time. In fact, it’s so crazy that you will need to watch the first movie at least 3 times to “get” it. (Or so they say.)
The planning for the first movie has already been completed and it has entered the drawing phase and Mr. Hideaki Anno is working on the script for the second movie. The staff remains more or less the same as the TV series.
The first movie will revolve around the events covered in episode 6 of the TV series, basically Operation Yashima where Eva-01 takes down the angel with a positron rifle. That episode did not turn out the way Mr. Anno wanted it to, due to last-decade technical limitations, and he wants to make it right this time. Operation Yashima will be the climax of the first movie. Mr. Shinji Higuchi, the director of Sinking of Japan, will be in-charge of the Yashima portions of the movie.
NEW characters will be appearing in the second movie. (Please let it be Mana Kirishima!!!)
Although the uniform designs will remain unchanged, the NERV and SEELE logos will be changed. The NERV logo will be based on a bitten apple, while the new SEELE logo will be an apple with a serpent coiled around it. The new logos are references to the original sin as told by the Bible. Apparently, this reference may be paralleled by the movies’ story at some point.
It sounds to me that the first movie will be at least a partial remake and the second movie will branch off to a new story with new characters. I guess you can call it a parallel Eva universe?
As a fanboy, I can’t wait to see Eva with modern graphics. :3
P.S. Mana is the hawtest Eva girl. She deserves screen time!!!

MANA!!!

I can’t wait! More Mana would be totally sweet too, but… the BITTEN APPLE? >>;;
I guess I’ve grown onto the Fig Leaf for so long that changing the logo sounds insane. Plus, I’m not a fan of Macs =\
Anyway, hoping to see Eva in brand spankin new badass animation! :D

I’m dead curious about the casting.

I hope that the new Character won’t be Mana.
I hate her. I mean, I REALLY hate her.
She comes, gets Shinji and Asuka gets away with nothing.
Don’t know who has made that game specificly, but he never understood Evangelion.
But well, thats another Story.
And beside of the possibility, that Mana gets into the movies, I’m really exitet to see them.
If you ask me, the possibility is really low. Anno has his hands on it.

/me thinks that the movies will ruin the series!
i cant imagine something to be better then the series, it would probably such fake 3d animated n00b styled series:\

I am seriously looking forward to any kind of evangelion film. Nice to hear some news about it as I can rarely find anything about it on the net. I’m excited already, great blog.

Well, for one thing. I read that Anno is merely taking a “supervising”position this time around, while his longtime understudy, Kazuya (FLCL) Tsurumaki will be directing. This is where my worries begin. While I love both FLCL,and Gunbuster 2,..they are very much Tsurumaki’s takes on what Anno has laid out.
Especially Gunbuster 2,…it works pretty far away from Anno’s seminal work, and is more “wacky”than introspective. Something that I fear greatly in dealing with these films.
Another tidbit worth mentioning is that in other news are the blurbs that these new films stand alone without viewes needing to know anything about the original series.(GoS suddenly rushes to mind) Even pachinko players will be able to understand this..so no deep religious references, or cryptic phrases..
I’m still eager…but I’m also being very cautious.
BUT…in many ways., I always considered the first GoS as being a “lost arc” of the series…especially in how Asuka & Shinji’s relationship develops from that story.
Until then(crosses fingers)

hi and long time no see (online or otherwise),
thx for your synopsis of the Newtype writeup, which served to comfort me since i missed the issue, also thx to the evamonkey’s link, even tho i was there when the whole stack was laid out at kino not that long ago , all for lack of $$. good thing is, i finally got myself a new job at a comic rental store to regain a footing. so when the movies finally hit the screen, we could prolly all afford to see it in Tokyo together (perhaps)
i did get you a nice towel with sexy Saya & Diva on it frm Comic Market, but details will follow in due time… the house lost internet service while i was still in Tokyo in August, sigh ( for one )…
till next episode ( by zima )

Was the irony intentional? Mmmmmm…
Morris, please read the entry again. This time with your eyes open. kthx.
And as for Mana Kirishima, I’ll say it again: She’s the hawtest Eva girl. :3

What’s so cool about Kirishima Mana is that she’s pretty much a perfect combination of Asuka & Rei,which makes a great deal of sense in terms of compatibility with Shinji-kun.
I love that producer, Ohtsuki has stated that the current anime climate is rife with overplayed otaku junk as a result of EVA’s success. I also love that a big motivating factor toward making these is one of rejection of this current philosophy…After all..the original series was created as a rejection of anime cliches in the 90s.
Full-circle…I like that.

Whoever is an Eva fan and did not enjoy the movie in the least is a crackpot. And I am sickened to hear that CG will be involved unless it will used to simply clean up animation shots somewhat. Any battles done in CG that turn out looking like *dare I say Vandread?* will ultimately ruin the anime we have all come to love. How it was done originally is something that keeps my memories of it nostalgic. Sure it wasn’t the best animation and I’ll be damned if the budget wasn’t large enough to fit such a great story, but it kept us all on the edge of our seats wanting more and when it finally ended with the two already existing movies we were all wiping the slobber from our faces as the credits began to roll. This is a timeless anime, with amazing characters, great musical compilations and unforgettable battle scenes. Let’s hope that these movies only add to this classic series and does not destroy it the same way George Lucas has destroyed his own with over the top special effects and horrible new characters. . . . .

I couldn’t agree more with Adamantium_Jedi. Except for one thing, alot of anime now doesn’t compare to the animation in Evangelion. The traditional animation of Evangelion is beautiful and I feel CG has damaged the majority of the animes it is put into now a days. It is used as a shortcut moreso than an improvement over traditional animation.
I have very low expectations for these films. Evangelion is known by all true anime fans as a classic; it is timeless. Those films and series which are timeless should never be changed, ever. I’ll go see these films without a doubt and maybe they will be good, but Anno better seriously put his heart and soul into this just as he did with the original Eva. This can’t be a milking of a franchise, this has to be what Eva was; a personal piece.
Anno… please don’t screw this up.
