Konata’s Fanart
Please watch Lucky Star episode 8 before reading this entry.
Remember how Konata was being so proud of the fact that her fanart submission was published in Newtype? Well I browsed through the latest issue in Kinokuniya today and indeed it was there! I took a picture of it secretly with my compact digital camera when no one was looking. Just like downloading fansubs and jaywalking, it’s okay as long as you don’t get caught.
By the way it’s the drawing on the right depicting Akira. Apparently Konata is an Akira fan. So cool. The accompanying text basically says that this submission is a message of support of Akira-sama and also, as a side note, includes a small plead for Shirashi-kun to be given better treatment.
Kyo-ani are cool people.

That’s an awesome fanart drawing, haha. Akira’s massive mood swings get better every ep, wonder she can keep it up much longer, heh.
Good investigative reporting DM!

Well I’m actually not that impressed at all. For one thing the second she mentioned the post card I was like “This is going to appear in the actual real life Newtype issue and Kadokawa ordered Kyoto Animation to make Konata mention it in the anime to boost sales”. So is Lucky Star a comedy anime or Kadokawa ad campaign? Secondly its really not anything I haven’t seen done before in shows like Jericho (Where one of the characters has a Myspace account you can visit on the real internet, V The Mini Series (Where the producers set up mock posters around New York with a picture of the Visitors on them that actually appeared all over the world in the show and when they spray painted the V on them in the show overnight, people woke up to find the posters in real life now had V on them) and Idolm@ster Xenoglossia (Where main character Haruka Amami actually has a blog in real life). But you know never mind that Sunrise did it, we only praise Kyoto Animation when they do something cool. All I can say is they did it and its interesting, but whoopy flippity jippity doo it’s been done. People can ignore this post of differing interpretation and go on praising Kyoto Animation as the most original company ever now.

Amami Haruka has a blog?

Or is this simply a case of KyoAni breaking the fourth wall as it has a habit of doing in Lucky Star? OMG TEH CONSPIRACY!!!

You don’t have to be original or creative to be cool. I don’t see the problem.

VIRAL MARKETING IS VIRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL.

Maybe because the show sucks. And for something that only exists to feed the lolicon fetish, it has virtually no fanservice. Pretty much anyone who would be interested in Idolmaster is watching Nanoha and Nagasarete instead.
KyoAni need not be either praised or blamed for this. What good does it do them to sell more issues of Newtype? Who really profits? Kadokawa of course. They’re the ones running the show. If the animation contract had gone to some other studio, Nomad or whoever, this same stunt would surely have happened. And Lucky Star has always been an advertising vehicle for Comptiq and related publications. It’s not even the first manga+anime to be used for advertising in this way.Not by a long-shot.
It’s a commercial, but it’s done in a cute and entertaining way. I see a little subversion in it as well. It’s a crappy drawing, but can you honestly imagine something better if they had used a real fanart?
I’ve long since tired of reading the ridiculous exuberance of under-talented teenagers that draw those things.

@Telliamed : You sound very tired with life…take a break.
@DarkMirage: Was the pic taken with your new phone? Heard you lost your old one.
