FLCL (Fooly Cooly)

Again, Gainax managed to screw my mind up pretty bad, but after rewatching the thing, I finally manage to get the plot down…As usual, this seemingly innocent looking anime contains so much info that my head is bursting. Luckily it’s only 6 episodes…Evangelion is a pain in terms of trying to rewatch it. Like Evangelion, that deals with individuals needing their existence to be recognized by others, FLCL deals with the pressure children have to go through, acting more like adults than adults themselves. Of course, the show, like Eva, doesn’t TELL you that straight forward. Noooo, it makes your head hurts and FORCES you to suck up all the details from the bombardment of infomation in order to get EVEN THE PLOT. And let me tell you this: if you have trouble understanding Evangelion, then FLCL will leave you confused like crap. Especially because it squeezed too much infomation into SIX episodes. Oh, and the relationships between characters are confusing to say the least…

Graphically, FLCL isn’t anything special. It did, however, had a few defining sequences, like the bullet time in the first episode. (with 360 degrees rotating camera, no less)

Plotwise, it is one of the weirdest animes I have EVER seen. I will not go into much details, let’s just say one guy has eyebrows 5cm thick and that the main character, who is 12, has…errrmmm…relationship, shall we say, with 17 year-old…

And those you think the title makes no sense, you are right. However, it plays QUITE an important part. Hint: watch out for words on the photograph in the last episode.

FLCL was an anime that came out of nowhere and converted me. (ok, not nowhere, more like from the MegaTokyo forums) Gainax still has it. ^_^

Final Score:
9.5/10
Not everyone will like, or even understand FLCL, but for those who do, it ranks waaaaay up there.
