Instant Supercomputers – Just add PCI cards.

Wired News: Turn your PC into a super computer

The new chip is a parallel processor capable of performing 25 billion floating-point operations per second, or 25 gigaflops.

According to the company, the chip has the potential to bring supercomputer performance to the desktop.

An ordinary desktop PC outfitted with six PCI cards, each containing four of the chips, would perform at about 600 gigaflops (or more than half a teraflop).

At this level of performance, the PC would qualify as one of the 500 most powerful supercomputers in the world.

BTW, Singapore has 2 entries in the top 500 computer list… top500.org is in my bookmarks. :D Still waiting for the 22nd list… If this chip DOES work, Nippon should be crying right now, what with NEC being beaten so easily… Hmmm, although they could modify the chip to work with NEC… Will the result be SkyNet!??!? (that’s from Terminator for those of you who don’t watch movies… -.-‘)

ClearSpeed said the new chip is also very low-power, operating at about 2 watts, which would allow it to run off a laptop battery and wouldn’t require special cooling.

Doesn’t this sound too good to be true!??! Instant super computer that doesn’t require extra cooling?!?!?! I would usually trust syndicate sources, but the Phantom incident made me lose a lot of faith in news services… Speaking of Phantom, the website is up again! I thought they ran off with all the preorder money… -.-‘ http://www.phantom.net/ Still the exact infomation though, not even any new announcements. Meh, all talk and no solid evidences.
