First of all, humans are Liliums, (spelling?) which are formed from the original angel, Lilith. This is evident if you look at the bottom half of the unawaken Lilith carefully: the protruding things are actually tiny human legs.

Ok, I’m not too sure about the sequence of events and such, but… The first impact took place and a part Lilith was split to form Adam. (I think…) Adam in turn, was the origin of all other Angels. For some reason or another, Lilith slept in the Black Moon while Adam slept in the White Moon. The Black Moon is actually the Geo Front, the base of NERV. The White Moon is under Antartica, the location of the second impact.

Now… we come to SEELE. SEELE, german for soul, is an organization that dates back to prehistorical time, the elite secret group that controlled the whole behind the curtains. They possessed the Dead Sea Scrolls (which BTW, are ACTUAL reallife artifacts) which foretold the ENTIRE human history. (past and future) They wanted to bring about the third impact in order to fulfill the prophecy. (or evolve mankind, or whatever other theories you got there) So, in order to accomplish this, they created Gehim. Actually, Gehim wasn’t mentioned much at all in the series, so I’m not sure what it was. Anyway after the second impact (I THINK!), Gehim was disbanded, and most of its staff were moved to NERV, a new organization under UN. NERV’s job is to defend mankind from Angels, who wants to cause the third impact too. However, an Angel-induced third impact will rid the world of all humans, and that is a big no-no.

So, NERV’s official duty is to protect mankind from Angels. It’s staff knows that angels are not the reason and believes that they are trying to stop the third impact. However, under these two layers of deceptions, the true purpose of NERV, known only to Gendou and Ritsuko, is to CAUSE the third impact. What’s even more complicating is that Gendou secretly wants a DIFFERENT third impact from that wanted by SEELE. (his secret bosses)

And THAT sets the background for EoE… Too sleepy now… more coming tomorrow. :P

Okay, tomorrow’s here. Let’s continue where we left off. At the end of the Evangelion series, the 17th angel attempted and almost succeed in causing the third impact. However, he realized that ALL the angels, including himself, had been tricked by SEELE right from the start. The giant being in NERV was not Adam, it was Lilith. Now, a third impact needs a few things, a catalyst is one of them. The angels wanted Adam to be the catalyst, the resulting third impact will cause all humans to disappear. Gendou himself wanted Lilith as the catalyst, the resulting third impact that will be beneficial to himself. (since Rei is Lilith and Gendou controls Rei, more on this later) SEELE wanted a third impact beneficial to mankind. (in their opinions) The catalyst in SEELE’s version will be talked about later.

Ok, apparently, the Lance of Longnius is needed for SEELE’s version of the third impact. In one of the episodes, Gendou revisited Antartica and the shipment brought back on an UN aircraft carrier was the Lance. When Gendou used the Lance to destroy Arael, the 15th angel, thus causing the Lance to go into moon-orbit, SEELE was not so happy with him. (you notice throughout the series SEELE was talking about controlling Gendou and how the dog was biting its owner…something along these lines)

Now that the Lance is gone, SEELE is screwed. So, in the 3rd last episode, they used Tabris, aka Kaoru, to reach the Centra Dogma and attempted to cause an Angel + Lilith third impact. (which is not as good as their original plan, but still better than Angel + Adam) But Kaoru was smarter than the other angels and realized that the being was Lilith, so he begged Shinji to kill him… which Shinji did.

OOOOOOOk, finally, we reach the start of the actual movie itself…

Asuka is still unconcious… Shinji visits her… He… ermmm… did some “nice things”. (hint: listen to the sound and look carefully at his hand afterwards) Then boring things happened… yadda yadda… Finally, SEELE got sicked of NERV and attempted a peaceful take-over using all the MAGI computers in the world in a joint-effort to hack into NERV’s MAGI. Of course, Ritsuko is too l33t and somehow managed to save the computer at the last second again. (suspiciously, the animation of the failed-virus looked a LOT like the one for Ireul, the computer virus angel)

Anywayz, SEELE is pissed off, so they sent in the JSDF (I think) to forcefully capture NERV, who were labelled as terrorists now… (wow, the SEELE old men sure are influential in the governments) JSDF showed no mercy and killed everyone, armed or unarmed… Shinji is as usual, hiding in some corner and talking nonsense. They sent Asuka’s unconcious body into EVA-02 and launched it so that it would not be captured. The B2-stealth-bomber-lookalikes started flying in a very inefficient formation. (on top of each other, how the hell do you drop your payload if there’s an emergency?) You get to see a nice 2-second animation of the entry plug being inserted into EVA-05 to 13. (look carefully, the dummy plug says “Kaoru Nagisa”. They are just like NERV’s dummy plugs, except they contain clones of Kaoru instead of Rei)

The mass-produced EVAs circled NERV… Hmmm… I can’t recall when Asuka wakes up… Anwyay, some battleship fired on her and she woke up and kicked the ship’s ass… Asuka “destroyed” all the evangelions while on internal battery. And “all’s right with the world”, RIGHT? Meanwhile… Gendou is groping Rei’s breast… Ok, actually he intended to start his own third impact… He fused Adam into his hand (don’t ask me, but I think THAT gives him control over the third impact when it happens) and told Rei to open her AT field. Ok, some explainations needed here. Rei, as people believe, IS actually a clone of Gendou’s wife, Yui. Now before you freak out and think about how Rei + Shinji = incest, Rei does NOT contain Yui’s soul. Rei actually has the soul of Lilith, which is why Lilith in the Centra Dogma was immobile. This is why Rei can project an Angel AT Field as seen in the 3rd last episode of the series. Yui’s soul is actually inside EVA-01, which is why it syncs with Shinji so well. (some says that EVA-00 contains the soul of Ritsuko’s mother, which is why it went berserk and attempted to kill Gendou) Anywayz, Gendou attempted to fuse with Rei and then with Lilith to create a third impact the way he wanted. Rei, however, suddenly “heard” Shinji and her love for Shinji betrayed Gendou. She rejected Gendou and fused with Lilith by herself. Then she did the “freaky gigantic Rei” thing…

MEANWHILE… Asuka underestimated the mass-produced EVAs. They all have the S2 engine, which allows them to regenerate their bodies. All the “dead” EVAs suddenly come alive and took her by surprise. Her AT Field was helpless as the blades the EVAs were carrying turned out to be Lance of Longnius duplicates which can pierce through AT Fields. Asuka DIED. (don’t try to argue your way around it, she died…)

Oh yeah… before that happened, Shinji made out with Misato, who subsequently died from blood-loss or maybe devastated at Shinji’s bad kissing skills… He finally went into EVA-01 and entered the Geo-Front.

Back to after Asuka died… Shinji was deeply disturbed and screaming as usual. The EVAs noticed him and circled him, forming the Sepiroth Tree of Life. (as expected, ripped directly off Hebrew texts) Unexpectedly, EVA-01 was catalyst of the soon-to-be third impact. The Lance of Longnius also flew back from space. Note: this is what SEELE had always wanted, a third impact with an Evangelion as the catalyst and with the aid of the Lance. Anywayz, unexpected to SEELE, Rei/Lilith came out and did some weird stuff. She/It took control of all the mass-produced EVAs and gave Shinji total control of the third impact. (because you know, she loves him) Then little Reis turned everyone into jelly-o and the whole world died…

Now for what happened during this period, please watch episode 25 and 26 of the series. They showed us what happened in everyone’s mind when they were combined into a single entity.

Anywayz, Shinji decided that this sucks. Although having other people to criticize and be mean to him sucks, he decided that becoming a single entity sucks more because there is no recognition of SELF. He needed recognition that he, as a person, exists. Who better for the job then Asuka. Shinji stopped the third impact and the two of them wakes up on the beach. (some say you can notice elements from Asuka, Rei and Misato on the new Asuka, in other words, Shinji’s vision of a perfect girl.. lol… me not sure, she does have the bandages though)

For SOME reason, Shinji started strangling Asuka, but stopped. Then Asuka ended the movie with her most famous line… No one actually knows why Shinji did it, just like no one actually knows what Gendou said when he shot Ritsuko, to which she responded “liar”. (anything from “I like pie” to “I love you” has been suggested) My guess is he is wimping out as usual and regretted his decisions for a second… Also, it is unconfirmed that at the time they woke up on the beach, what happened to the rest of humanity. Maybe they are still a single entity and only Shinji and Asuka were left on earth. Maybe they are just not on the screen, but somewhere else on earth. (meaning they are not a single entity anymore) OR maybe everyone else have not arrived back yet. Whatever it was, it was all Shinji’s choice, so it depends on what you think Shinji would have done… Yes, it was all Anno Hideki’s brilliant plan to have an ending that screws with people’s mind…

Note: These are based on my memory and are my own interpretations. There is no correct explaination for Evangelion, which is exactly what Hideki wanted. A monkey could randomly hit keys on a keyboard and write an acceptable interpretation of Evangelion…
