Singapore tames ‘Sex and the City’
Like all television shows in Singapore, “Sex and the City” is at the mercy of censors at the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts, one of Singapore’s most powerful government bodies.
Bias. Bias. Bias.
The show appears well timed. Singapore last year ranked last in a global survey of most sexually active nations for a second straight year, fertility rates are at a record low and the government is debating whether to legalize oral sex.
Talking about sex makes people want to have more sex. What the…
Singaporeans generally support the government’s tough laws, including the death penalty for drug smugglers, a ban on pornography and curbs on political dissent, as part of a social contract that in return has delivered years of prosperity.
What about the chewing gum? Aren’t we supposed to be infamous for that?
SAN JOSE, California (AP) — A small company called Acacia Research Corp. went after some of the biggest names in broadcasting last month, suing nine companies for an estimated $100 million for allegedly violating its patent on streaming video.
That earned Acacia a spot on what the Electronic Frontier Foundation considers a top 10 list of intellectual property ignominy: patents the online civil liberties group is seeking to strike down as unwarranted and harmful to innovation.

HONG KONG, China (Reuters) — China has kicked off war games simulating an invasion of Taiwan as military chief Jiang Zemin vows to recover the democratic island by 2020.
The week-long land, sea and air exercises started on Dongshan island off China’s southeastern coast in the first half of July after months of preparation, Hong Kong’s Ta Kung Pao newspaper said.
About 18,000 troops are taking part in the exercises, which will aim for the first time to demonstrate air superiority in the Taiwan Strait, the newspaper said.
2020? The hell… just get in and take it by force already, What are they waiting for? Erosion to wear away the Taiwan islands? Waiting until 2020 isn’t going to change anything at all if you are just going to use force anyway.
The period “before or after 2020 is the time to resolve the Taiwan issue,” military chief and ex-Communist Party chief Jiang told a recent expanded meeting of the Central Military Commission, the decision-making body of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), the Wen Wei Po newspaper said.
NO SHIT SHERLOCK!
In Washington, Pentagon officials said a crisis-simulation drill based on a growing Chinese military threat to Taiwan was played out this week by U.S. decision makers.
The exercise, called Dragon’s Thunder, was held on Monday at the Pentagon’s National Defense University.
Yeah man, we did simulations and shit. Those number thingies on the kompuuter you know. What the hell. What did they simulate? How to prepare to a nuclear winter? America officially acknowledges the People’s Republic of China as China, while Taiwan does not have official diplomatic relationships with the US. Officially, Taiwan is just a province. There is officially no American embassy in Taiwan. No siree, it’s the American Institue in Taiwan, not an embassy at all. I just like to point out that America’s foreign policies are hypocritical and illogical. Anything is justified by freedom and democracy. Oh noooz, we didn’t sell weapons to terrorists, we sold them to FREEDOM FIGHTERS and ANTI-COMMUNIST/FACIST/DICTATOR/FLAVOR-OF-THE-DAY REVOLUTIONARIES who will help to bring FREEDOM, DEMOCRACY and MCDONALDS to such barbaric countries as Cuba and Iran. I’m not saying that democracy is bad and shouldn’t be spread, but America shouldn’t be the one spreading it. Read up on “Bay of Pigs”.
Another thing, if America really believes so firmly in its obligations to uphold democracies and help to overthrow dictatorial governments, then it certainly didn’t act according to its principles. Why did it officially recognize the People’s Republic of China as a lawful government and a proper country in 1979? ( link ) FOR THE MONEY OF COURSE. Who the hell gives shit about crappy Taiwan, mainland is where the money is at. Note the MOST IMPORTANT line of the Communique:
The Government of the United States of America acknowledges the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China.
So… let’s put everything into perspective. The United States of America officially recognizes the People’s Republic as the ONE and ONLY China and Taiwan is a PROVINCE of China. The United States of America SELLS weapons and training to Taiwan. It conducts joint trainings with Taiwan. It promises to defend Taiwan from its own rightful government in the event of an “invasion” (normally we call inter-province troop movements “strategic repositioning”).
All in the name of defending freedom and democracy in Taiwan. Now imagine if China does the same to say… the state of Rhode Island. What would US call that? Terrorism? Conspiracy to overthrown the government?
P.S. I hate these stupid operational codenames. Dragon’s Thunder, OH THE CREATIVITY!
