FLCL

I just finished watching the first episode of FLCL, aka Fooly Cooly, aka Furi Kuri. The plot is plain WEIRD, and yet at the same time, strangely addictive. Emphasis on strange and addictive. Want to know what is it about? Ok, don’t get lost, because you probably will.

[SPOILERS]
On a hill overlooking the town in which the series takes place is a gigantic factory (supposedly for the making of “medical robots”) that just happens to look like an enormous clothes iron.

The protagonist, 12-year old schoolkid Naota, has a lot on his plate. His big brother has gone off to play baseball in the United States. His loser dad is obsessed with anime (one of many, many self-referential elements to the story). And he’s more than a little confused by the over-affectionate attention of his brother’s 17-year-old girlfriend. He attempts to deal with all this by developing a certain cool distance, but someone named Haruko is about to ride into his life and completely keep him from cultivating that false cool.

In their first meeting, Haruko runs Naota over with her scooter (he survives), revives him with his first kiss (in a “Matrix” “bullet time” 3D-style sequence), and then bashes him in the head with her guitar. It’s a boy-meets-girl story with a twist. Or about 20 million twists. Suffice to say, much more insanity ensues, including Haruko revealing that she’s an extraterrestrial with an interest in the medical robot factory and in the suspicious horn that grows from Naota’s head where she bashed him. Did I mention there’s a lot of craziness involved?
[/SPOILERS]

Taken from TechTV. Yes, all these happened in the first episode. Of course there is a perfectly reasonable explaination for the craziness: GAINAX is the producer. Yes, Gainax that made Evangelion. *mumbles*AlsoTheGainaxThatRefusesToShipInternational*mumbles*

I am DESPERATELY waiting for the 2nd episode…Curse you, Gainax. *shakes fist* And there’s the Evangelion Revival coming up this year…I need a healthier addiction, like drugs.
