UPDATE 22/11/2007: Ops, it seems that the DNS wasn’t the one that’s compromised. The page wasn’t working for some people so I assumed it was due to slow DNS propagation, but apparently Odex has always been hosted on PacNet (ironic). The hacker gained access to the web server itself, which probably means the SQL database too. I hope whoever designed the website for Odex had the common sense to salt the md5 hashes of the user passwords.
The domain odex.com.sg was replaced with a message from an unknown hacker. The page has since been taken down. I have mirrored a copy of the page here.
This server was fully hacked because the things ODEX are doing are just completly wrong!
So I hacked them due to my deep abominate against this company.The stupidity of the organisation can not only be seen in the quality of their products or in the disingenuousness of their actions, but also in their skills of web design, compatibility and programming.
You can see that by the fact that the server is now hacked.
Now, I don’t like to stereotype, but the hacker sounds Singaporean… I guess he wasn’t quite pleased with the latest development. (Even though it turned out to be a mistake.)
The colour scheme of the page also leaves much to be desired. That said, his command of English and aesthetic sense aside, I approve of his XHTML coding. He has the proper doctype defined and he uses <br/> as required. Too bad he made a typo (</head> instead of </title>) or the page would’ve validated.
It’s good to know that some people out there care about W3C standards, although I have a feeling that this particular individual will probably be behind bars soon.
Well I really want to stab them with a HUGE spoon(probably they already death pinned by it) I really do, SO WHAT IF WE ILLEGALLY DOWNLOAD ANIMES, It ain’t like THOSE guys have great at Security and all.
Hey… if they really want It not To be ILLEGALLY downloaded just let it be LEGAL :p
Or they can chose the hard way of renewing all the security an all over and over again wasting a lot of money cause IT ALWAYS BREACHED.
They make new security we make new tools to crack it open,big deal.

I have to concur with a neutral viewer: hacker did a splendid job to exploit Odex’s security, now he’s going to face the music for breaking Singapore’s laws.
That said, I like to highlight 2 points raised in this comment roll:
1. Odex’s technical capabilities
We all know that IP-based evidences are very, very weak, and for Odex to base IPs as evidence for copyright infringement is very implausible to discuss. Add to their incompetency, the “mistakes” of BayTSP and their now-insecure webpage, how are people going to believe and entrust their monetary posessions (a.k.a. e-Nets and online purchasing) onto Odex when they:
1. Don’t even bother to secure their website properly,
2. Never fully implemented a secure online transaction system, and
3. Had butchered their PR attempts at wooing their potential customers?
In a way, Odex has not gained any moral or plausible points for both their ongoing appeal, and the community. In any case, for the appeal, this latest string of events proves their incompetence of charging anyone for infringement. Insert “false positives” here.
2. The “Odex deserves it” mantra
Firstly, hacking is both morally and legally wrong. Even US laws forbid hacking “for malicious” purposes: this hackjob constitutes “a malicious” purpose, for Odex did not consent to have their website hacked, regardless of whether they should have beefed up security in the first place. Hacking is hacking, it’s illegal and there’s no two ways about it.
Second, I’m sure that everybody have a inkling of glee upon hearing Odex’s being hacked. It’s natural: here is the congregation of all anime worshippers, so I don’t view it in a disdaining light. (In fact, I lol-ed: Odex has been Odex’ed! Twice!!)
But for Singaporeans, remember, your government said “Internet is public domain”, so Odex can sue us for libel (which, rather speaking, is technically and figuratively impossible!).
With all said and done, I hope, as drmchsr0 said, we all enjoy the ride “On a highway to the end of all that we hold dear.”
Yeah, well, who cares? ODEX got hacked!!!That’s the only thing that really matters here.

The news already got out to the local paper, it seems we’ll hear about the hacker real soon…
It’s not like things will be taken lightly about downloading illegal anime i.e. licensed anime, especially after this incident. I’d say, it’d be better off that the hacker create a company similar to Odex (but at least better in subbing/dubbing and some other things), than just hack the company itself and cause direct impact on them. Does everything have to go down the worse path?
I’m still viewing this thing from a by-passer’s view, since the beginning. So I’m not on the opposition or the proposition side at all.
The way the hacker expressed his viewpoint was very biased and one sided. And yes I agree, it does make us look like immature losers.
Odex is wrong. The hacker’s wrong too. But we all know that Odex is much worst.
