Macross Frontier

Sheryl Nome

Why does watching Macross Frontier bring a warm and fuzzy feeling to my heart? Perhaps it’s the draw of its wonderful soundtrack composed by Yoko Kanno, or is it the oscillating love triangle between Alto, Sheryl and Ranka? The storytelling is altogether compelling and the seamless blending of audio and visual effects bring highlight to every episode, each one an unique and exhilarating ride to satisfaction. It’s difficult to pinpoint just what Macross F has done right, but the use of music as a central plot device is without a doubt a vital part of its magic.

Macross Frontier looks set to be the show of the year. Go watch it if you haven’t. It’s simply deculture. (Zentradian for “unbelievable”.)

P.S. The primary motivation for this post is my sudden urge to fanboy over Sheryl after having watched episode 5. Sheryl <3

    first!!!

I’ve heard alot of good things about this series so I might start watching it after my testing week is finished

  2. tj han says:

Considering it is 13 episodes, half of which is gone and NOTHING has happened, in terms of story it’s probably going to be a letdown. Also, the Valkyries themselves are so in the background that I can’t even remember how they look like, unlike say in Plus or Zero where each was quite distinct. That said, Sheryl is hot.

  3. The future is promising.

  4. Akiraman says:

I love Macross F the only Mecha Anime I watched it since the original Macross

  5. ajaxas says:

    >> Considering it is 13 episodes…

ANN considers these series is 25 episodes long.

PS: funny… there are 4 comments visible in the RSS feed and only one – on this page. :)

    Sheryl \o/!!!

Diamond Crevasse and Iteza Gogo Kyuji Don’t Be Late are both awesome songs, I’m hoping you’ll do a transliteration of them, DM.

Now to wait for What ’bout my star?….

  7. Snacks says:

I love how everything seems to be lively and vibrant compared to the other dreary looking shows. Yep, it’s definitely the show of the year. :D

And yeah, playful Sheryl ftw! \o\

  8. Leefe says:

Macross F is really great, even shadowing Code Geass in my opinion.
    Sheryl is sexy :3

  9. Epi says:

Yup always been a fan of Macross, and not going to stop now. The great thing about this show is that there is absolutely no need for gimmicks beyond mild fan service or last minute plot twists to keep us entertained because they know they have a solid story and solid characters.

  10. Guner says:

Odd taste. I think its kind of a blah show.

Im still watching it, cause, well its there and free, but that doesnt mean im in a rush to see the 2 unwatched episodes on my desktop.

  11. info600 says:

Goody, DM’s posting about Macross F.

So do you know anything about the slowdown of ‘one’ of the fansubber site?

  12. Harts says:

I have been watching it so far and I think it is great:) Great music and nice story.

  13. sara7890 says:

For some reason, based on my musical knowledge, I feel that Ranka’s voice is better than Sheryl’s.

They’re dragging out the relationships and character development for too long – we want some physical plot now. But then again… some men and girls want to see only more of Ranka-Alto-Sheryl fanservice.

And Alto is becoming annoying… he’s been acting too philosophical and heroic for the last two episodes…

  14. Tenketsu101 says:

What happen is ep 5 ?
    Me still on ep 4.
Would say its quite awesome in its 1st ep.
Been catching it since its then.

  15. manga says:

Yay, yet another one joins in the Macross Frontier Love :)

Goodly show. But I do feel bad if it´s only 13 eps, seems the pacing is to slow for that.

Sheryl is love and all, but I do think I´m more of leaning towards Ranka. Her hair is just so cute. And her cellphone, oh god what is that thing!!

Can´t wait for the next ep.

  16. surya says:

Awesome show…nuff said. The releases from Menclave on this show is just brilliant.

  17. Tmoo says:

just to clear something up: Macross F is 25 eps long. It would be a considerable INJUSTICE to macross as a whole if this copped out at 13 episodes, and judging from the pacing it’s going for 25, not 13.

another thing i like about macross F is that they don’t idolize the mecha, allowing the characters to be more fleshed out before the shit hits the fan and everyone starts pew-pew-ing.

  18. Lightmirage says:

Macross Frontier is definitely worth watching for no other reason than the fact that it’s a really deculturely awesome mix of music, the pursuit of dreams, as well as fan baiting (uhhh actually this one is probably a bad thing).

Can’t wait for school work to stop murdering me so I can watch it in peace =_=

  19. Saruto says:

This series was cemented as fukken awesome in ep 4 when Ranka sang Watashi no Kare wa Pilot, set to the training battle. It was BEAUTIFUL.

  20. info600 says:

no kidding, it actually match the battle for once (instead of some dramatic classical score that makes no sense at all)

  21. xADx Wolverine says:

I think its about time they came out with this and by the look of it I believe we got ourselves a winner.

Heres hoping that it goes past 13.

  22. surya says:

There are 26 episodes planned for this show arent there? So what is the talk of 13 episodes?

  23. 0ne says:

What if the Vajra are fighting a war to prevent their worlds from being colonised by the Earthlings?

  24. andreas says:

Are you trying to turn this into an ethical dilemma?

  25. surya says:

I have a feeling the vajra react to music.

  26. Guner says:

War is always an ethical dilemma.

Also i object to the super cute little anime doggie i got as an avatar.

  27. surya says:

I dont smoke and I am definitely not a girl. I object to my avatar as well.

  28. Ghoul says:

Voices voices voices voices voices voices voices voices … nuff said.

  29. Qad says:

Hmm, I do realise the hype around this series. I’ve never watched any previous Macross series, but I know this series is set after Macross 7.

Will I be missing out on any plotlines or events if I start watching Macross with this one? Or do I have to watch any of the previous Macross to fully understand what’s going on in the universe?

    EDIT/ADD-ON/OFF-TOPIC:
Why is my gravatar some moe girl junk? >=(

  30. surya says:

Qad you may miss a bit like somethings the Zentraedi do and what not. Also what deculture is…and why music is a big deal…and also how they become Micronized etc but nothing wikipedia cant cure…:P

And now I am a girl in a nurse uniform lol

  31. DarkMirage says:

You don’t actually need to know any of that to enjoy the series. And they do drop some hints to the background story, so Wikipedia is not necessary either. In fact, it’s more fun to figure it out yourself.

Also, you can register a Gravatar if you don’t like the randomized one.

  32. Anon says:

When Mikhail (supposed to be Michael) is acting like an ass, the fact that the VA is the same as Tieria’s becomes really obvious.

  33. surya says:

    What do you mean Anon?

  34. surya says:

Never mind I got it Anon…

  35. Soph says:

Hurray for more Macross. At this point, this new addition seems as if a good competitor to the original for top-spot in quality.

  36. epsilionX says:

this anime ROCKS!!!!!! the house compared too the other macross series

  37. aussiebear says:

If you’re being really picky, there’s actually 26 episodes.

    Episode 1 has two versions.

One was aired late last year (sometimes referred to as a “preview version” or “Deculture Edition” or “Macross Special Edition”)

A revised version that aired last month. (referred to as “broadcast version”)

The only major notable difference is the later version has certain battle scenes removed. (It doesn’t affect the story as a whole though).

Regardless, both versions can be acquired via P2P networks.

  38. random hero says:

it’s also worth watching purely for seeing the other characters (mainly mikhail) make fun of alto’s bishie-ness

  39. new fanboy says:

by far the best anime of the season(if not the year)!!!!!

i havent been this impatient for a release since …. i dont remember!

Music is amazing , i actually see myself buying the cd !!!
Action +storyline = reminiscent of the original macross with cptn Hunter (the good good good years).

a bit of help from wiki is still required for those whom havent seen Macross (1st season of robotech for the people in the US , or for those whom watched it on “Starmovies” channel in 1995-96)

VFs + good music + amazing battles might be better then a double cheese combo

i hope the series is longer the 24/26 episodes

  40. shaquille says:

man good job with the reviews i see your stepping up on all your publishment.

  42. Nikon says:

I dont think its just the fact that they use music as a central plot but the fact that its good music lol. Macross 7 wasnt all that great to me because i didnt like the music. This draws connections to the entire macross universe with perhaps an exception to macross plus. The characters are great and some of the fighting is pretty deso. I forgot what the gay macross operator’s name is but hes hilarious. Even Klan and all the tertiary characters.

Its just a great blend of things

  43. Mechlover says:

They killed Michael!!!!:(:(:(:(:( sorry I just finished watching episode 20, makes me sad, spoiller moment
