Graphite 2008

Hi guys. This is a competition for Singaporean artists (or those who think they are artists anyway), so if you are one of the 6 billion people who don’t live on this tiny island, then stop reading and go watch Macross Frontier 23.

Anime Festival Asia

As part of the previously-mentioned AFA08, NUS Comics Animation Society is organizing Graphite 2008, an illustration competition. There are two categories: Character Design (i.e. well-exposed moé girls or homoerotic bishounens), and Short Story Manga (i.e. complicated in-jokes that no one but the author and two other fan girls understand.)

Deadline is 28th September 2008. Refer to official website for more information.

Do you know that graphite carbon atoms are sp2 hybridized and are weakly bonded between layers of macromolecular covalent structures?

I’m gonna win this. Despite the fact I got 17 for Art.

  2. ryuko_hikaru says:

    DEADline. Not Dateline.

I can’t draw for nuts so I am going to skip this.

  3. ILM says:

Then of cause you would know that diamond is sp3 hybridized and is a giant molecule that is made up of only covalent bonds.

  4. Kurogane says:

Oh shoot, I forgot to post about this after promising jinya.

  5. nutcase23 says:

    hybridization is just a theory!

    but yeah =D

  6. DarkMirage says:

A “theory” in scientific terms refer to a different thing than layman usage. Gravity is just a theory.

  7. LianYL says:

    N(x)=f(e) X g(e)
Number of electrons in possible states

  8. Fumika says:

I did know graphite is sp2 hybridized, which means that you have delocalization between the three branches of the C-C bonds. This leads to weak Van Der Waal’s intermolecular bonding between different layers of carbon. This explains why layers of graphite slide of each other with little force e.g. when you’re writing with a pencil, and why the lead is brittle. But due to the nature of the hybridized bonding graphite displays decent tensile strength because the sp2 hybrized covalent bonding can stretch!

Soz, I got a bit side tracked there, but I wanted to know where that Hatsune Miku picture is from.

  9. Yukarin says:

Seems like every chem paper I get a question on hybridization of carbon in graphite/diamond/buckyball. At least this reminded me to study for finals, lol.

  10. Heron says:

    Damn you Chemistry!!!

Ok, after that, I think I will ask my brother to join that. I can’t even draw a piece of cloud with a gun on my head, so nah.

  11. Ding says:

    I hope they accept stickman

  12. Ninjai Gang says:

That’s pretty good isn’t it. Hey, awesome to see Ninjai on your front page.

  13. mmmmm, sexy girl with green hair, DO WANT. Om nom nom nom nom…
