Citizen Kane

This 1941 film by Orson Welles is widely known as the best movie ever made. The story starts with the death of millionaire Charles Foster Kane and a reporter’s quest of finding out what Kane’s mysterious last word meant.

The story is as deep as a bottomless pit and the character developement was insane. Although the film was a bit slow for my liking, as was common with films from that era. The film appears quite easily understood on the surface, but on closer examinations bring up a lot of minute details and something things critical to understanding the characters.

Graphically, the movie was ahead of its times. It used some camera tricks such as being able to focus everything in one single shot. (the technical term escapes me) This makes some need optical illusions. (hint: the scene where after Kane signs away his deed to Thatcher & Co, he walks towards the window and the scene where his wife was playing jigsaw puzzle while he backed towards a fireplace) Also it was one of the first few movies to start filming the ceilings. (it is actually a piece of cloth, real ceilings cannot be used as the mikes and lighting equipments are there, which in the first place, is why most films of that time don’t show ceilings)

Final score:
9.9/10 (0.1 point deducted because I don’t like black and white…lol)

Now onwards to Dr.Strangelove by Stanley Kubrick. (2001’s director)
