*sniff* It has finally come to an end. The credits rolled by slowly, as the reality of it all finally sunk in. I finished Call of Duty on the 2nd hardest setting and dammit, I’ve got nothing else to do now. And no, I am NOT going to replay the whole thing on the highest difficulty. Call of Duty = best WW2 shooter EVER. My only complain with the game is the unnecessary British campaign. If Britain really had soldiers like in the game, who the hell needs USA’s help? I mean, most of the British missions goes something like this:
1. Infiltrate Warship/Building/Nazi HQ/Public Toilet/What-have-you-not
2. Kill everyone in it
3. Plant some token explosives to justify the mission
4. Run to a nearby truck parked RIGHT outside the target and somehow was NOT noticed by the Germans
In other words, the British campaign suffers from “FPS Hero Syndrome”. On the other hand, the USA and especially the Russian campaigns are some of the best gaming experiences I’ve had. Some highlights of the whole game and the campaign they are in:
1. Riding in a “french tin can” while fending off German vehicles and roadside infantries – USA
2. Using a Flak cannon to defend yourself against incoming bombers – British (I think the only good thing about the British campaign)
3. Landing at the bank of Stalingrad with no weapon and a single clip of ammo, and being the only one alive in your landing craft as you are the first to get off before it was hit by an artillery shell. Meanwhile your comrades die like ants and the non-conscripted Soviet officers boss you around – Russian
4. Running across the Red Square and having to pick up a rifle from a fallen comrade because up to that point you still only have a single clip of ammo. Meanwhile the MG42s and enemy tanks take potshots at you. Running backwards gets you mowed down by your superior’s MG42 – Russian
6. After taking a building, you have to fend against an unlimited number of Nazis attempting to retake the building until your reinforcements arrive. Suddenly they are everywhere in the building and you camp a spot just to surivive. Meanwhile you still have to run to two anti-tank guns on the second floor to destroy the occasional tank – Russian
5. Driving a tank and fighting tank to tank battles with Panzers and other German tanks. Best vehicle combat I’ve seen in a FPS… except maybe C&C Renegade – Russian
Clearly, my favorite campaign is the Soviet one. The whole game is great and all but I was hoping for a better ending. The last few missions were way too easy, especially compared to the British and Russian missions where you had to hold a place until reinforcements arrive. The last mission was kind of anti-climatic too, all you do is clear a building, reach the rooftop, and let your comrades plant the Soviet flag. Heck, the first mission was harder than this.
All in all CoD is the best WW2 shooter ever. The only thing that came close was Medal of Honor’s Omaha beach landing. Gotta’ love being pinned down by machine gun fire while using those beach barriers that are only slighly larger than your own body as cover.
It’s the best, so I don’t have to give a final score right?
P.S. The ending credits quite amusing too. ;)
P.S.S. I only played the singleplayer portion of the game. I can’t play the multiplayer for various reasons… like ermm… my internet access is not working *cough*
