Sumomo mo Momo mo – Saikyou OX Keikaku

So, instead of spending last night dong last minute revision for the Higher Chinese O’level paper which I just took a few hours ago, I decided that it was a futile struggle and translated the OP of Sumomo mo Momo mo instead. This song has the coolest lyrics that I have ever seen. Seriously.

Sumomo mo Momo mo

But before that, I just want to add a note about Sumomo mo Momo mo’s title. 李 (sumomo) means “plum”, 桃 (momo) means peach and particle “mo” means “also” or “too”.

The title is actually derived from a popular Japanese tongue-twister 「李も桃も桃の内」 (“sumomo mo momo mo momo no uchi“), literally, “Plums too, peaches too, they are in peaches”, or to put it in English, “Plums and peaches are both part of the peach family.”

Yeah, the title of the anime is not actually nonsense. Shock! As to what plums and peaches imply in Japanese, I’m not really certain. The song seems to use them as metaphors of child-bearing/pregnancy, I think? Or maybe chastity. Whatever.

Read on for the lyrics.

Let’s make a child!

I humbly declare my love for you.
I pledge my whole life,
To become a woman liked by men.
I will keep training myself, never stopping.

Please let me hone my body and soul here.
Even if spears fall from the sky, I will protect you.

Tonight is the night, a night of surging righteousness,
It will not cease, not today, not tomorrow.
Let us combine our genes full of swelling vigor,
And leave behind the world’s strongest child for our families.
My one and only chastity, Su-mo-mo!
I humbly offer it to you.

The Dragon faces east with grace,
The Dog faces the west full of love,
Draw the curtains of unseen destiny,
As we pass through each other, never stopping.

The lightning speed techniques change into a fragrant smell.
Let’s fulfil our duty of life without interruptions.

In my heart of strength and justice, I feel your presence.
At the end of our night of passion, a night of love,
Please let me bear the world’s strongest child,
And make it a sign of harmony, Su-mo-mo!
Time will start to move.

Ten months and ten days, time passes by,
The plums and peaches turn supple.
Our love bears fruit, fruit of our passion.
Let us leave behind the world’s strongest child for the world.
My one and only chastity, Su-mo-mo!
I humbly offer it to you.

The plums and the peaches too! (osu!)

BTW the part about ten months and ten days (十月十日). Put the radicals together and you get 萌 (moé!).

The lyrics for this song is totally deep.

thanks for the lyrics and translation. this song is not only catchy, but witty too. imagine us singing this song on the way home one day and a japanese happen to pass by. lol

  3. waista says:

Do you _really_ not know what a peach symbolizes or are you just being coy? I can’t tell.

  4. DarkMirage says:

I really don’t know. I’m just guessing from the context of the song.

  5. Tsubaki says:

I love the OP. It’s just this zesty oriential feel.

  6. Orochi says:

    I’ll say it.

The peach, in Japanese culture, represents a women’s vulva.

Put this aspect into the song and you see how cheeky it it.

  7. Mac says:

Crumbs… I figured the peaches and plumbs euphemisms were just representing childbearing.

I’ve heard this song about twenty times. I feel dirty now.

  8. Crest says:

The place of the female role in the Japanese society…… terribly fascinating.

The song is an innocent tongue-twister, nothing more.

P.S, I never knew you have a spell checker D:

  9. helspectre says:

This should be renamed the fertility song.

  10. Ronin says:

    Seconded, helspectre! ^o^

  11. Julius Firefocht says:

Most lewd lyric I have seen in a while. And thus automatically the best lyric I have seenin a while. XD

Thank you, DM, for this translation. This OP has gotta be among the better ones this season.

  12. RDrake says:

If not for the fact that some people above me spilled the secret…I still wouldn’t get the meaning of the song…how slow I am…

  13. Sportlink says:

secret!?! the first line is lets make a child, it doesnt get much more obvious than that

  14. ilovemomo says:

    Orochi Singapore says:
The peach, in Japanese culture, represents a women’s vulva.

Japanese culture??? Is it not obvious when you look at the split side of a peach and its color?

  15. Mr Potato head says:

It sounds like it’s one of those things that could easily be a double entendre, there are a few in English (anyone old enough to remember Mrs Slocombe from “Are you being served”, and “Her Pussy”? Just the title today would have a whole different meaning in the USA ;-).

Generally peaches are commonly meant to resemble backsides in Australia at least.

Given the other lyrics in the song I thought it was some reference to family, since the tongue twister on which the author says it is based refers to plums and peaches, being of the same family.

Don’t get hung up on the name, it is probably because it is a common Japanese tongue twister that it made it as a title – so lets not try to read too much into it.

I’ve seen releases by 3 different groups, and the lyrics are all slightly different.

Great show though, gives me a good laugh

Thanks to the author for the explanatory notes.

  16. Sydt says:

    Oh yah!

Thank you for this great lyric~

I’m not sure if I understand the “peach’s and plum thing” percisely, but I do get a crazy feel to this song, it’s that aweosme!♥

  19. Aiko says:

A little thing, but the third line is actually “To become a woman liked by ‘you'”. A little mistranslation, definitely not “men” here. Also, this whole song sounds like saying to a particular loved person.

  20. Aiko says:

Aw I mean, misinterpretation, rather than mistranslation. but just my opinion.. Anyway, love this song.
