Maid Café in Shanghai

Don777 recounts his trip to Shanghai where he visited a maid café run by a Japanese owner. The cafe name is @Niaohai (@ニャオハイ), which is the Mandarin reading for the owner’s surname Toriumi (鳥海).

Niaohai

According to him, the staff generally consists of university students and they do speak Japanese. Also, they will actually sit down to chat with the customers, something you don’t really see in Japan. The décor looks better than most of the maid/cosplay cafés I’ve been to in Japan and the price is about the same: 40 RMB (about 5.30 USD) for a cup of coffee. (About twice as expensive as Starbucks in China.)

The café is located in Jin Jiang Tower, which belongs to a hotel chain that has presence all over China. You can read more on Don’s blog (in Japanese). And if you’re interested in visiting the place yourself:

Shanghai Jin Jiang Tower 6F,
161 Chang Le Road, Shanghai
Tel: +86-(0)21-6415-1188
Email: niaohai55@yahoo.co.jp

The café also has an official blog with a picture gallery. You can also find more pictures and thoughts in this blog entry by a Japanese student studying in Shanghai.

Doesn’t even look better than the local Cosafe.

  4. quendidil says:

The one at the lower right is alright IMHO. And they probably do look better in real life, as stated by the original blogger too.

On a side note, is Cosafe still around?

  7. Ryuko_Hikaru says:

Those girls look horrible, no different from Cosafe.

I will make a side note not to visit that place if I am ever in Shanghai.

  8. Soshi says:

Darn, I wish I was in Shanghai to at least take a look.

  9. Beowulf Lee says:

I read the name as “piss ocean” before I saw the kanji.

Frankly, I don’t think you can judge how the girls are solely from pics along. There are plenty of pretty girls with crappy social skills, or who’s conversation’s level of intelligence just makes me cringe.

  10. I’m reminded of a similar establishment, but the one we have in my country isn’t a maid cafe but a kissa transplanted into Makati City, with some of the ladies working there wearing maid uniforms:

Judging from the commentaries in the Multiply page, despite the US$4/hour rate, they’re becoming loyal customers who keep coming back for more. XD

Today, My blog(Don’s blog) has massive access from all over the world(^^;.
I don’t know the reason at first.

Sorry, But I have no plan to write English articles in my blog for the
time being. Partly because the blog host(cocolog) don’t offer biligual function (a la dannychoo.com), Partly because I really don’t have enough English skill to write articles in a proper manner…

Shanghai related story is not terminated. So please stay tuned to Don’s blog.
